Federation Peace & Justice Coordinators Meet
From October 1-4, 2009, the United States Federation of
Sisters of St. Joseph Justice and Peace Coordinators met at St Joseph Center in
LaGrange Park, IL. Through prayer, sharing and reflection about 35 sisters and
associates reviewed and revitalized their commitment to greater peace and
justice for our world.
|
Carol Zinn, who has been the NGO representative at the UN
for the Sisters of St. Joseph, delivered an update on the Millennium Development
Goals’ progress. Her input and other presentations allowed those present to be able to perceive the global impact CSJ’s have throughout the world, and become
more aware of how the impact of fulfilling the MDG’s would affect the
lives and ministries of sisters globally. One of the outcomes of this
meeting was a pledge from each present to be in contact with another CSJ in some other
country in an effort to remain personally involved with global issues.

| Tears of laughter and some of sadness were shared during the
celebration of Carol Zinn’s (left) years of service to the group, and Griselda Martinez, CSJ (right) from Mexico was welcomed as the new NGO representative at
the UN.
On Saturday morning, members of the group (lower left) went to the
detention center in Chicago
to pray with and support those immigrants, who in shackles,
were saying good-by to families and friends as they were put on busses to be
deported. Stories like the one of a teenage boy who was brought as a small
child and knows no one in the town where he is being sent, were very
heart-breaking and raised lots of questions about his safety as well the
terrible emotional hurt he must experience. Efforts for change in our countries
immigration policies continue to be a strong concern and effort for change by
those seeking peace and justice.
Kathy Sherman, CSJ, introduced her new CD, "Walk With Me", in an evening
concert. It includes songs based on her awareness of the tragedy surrounding the murdering of children.

Rejuvenated and stimulated to carry on the ministries of
peace and justice, the team concluded the meeting with the celebration of Eucharist
on Sunday morning.
