Raising Awareness of Modern Day Slavery
The Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) held a special event in New York: “Breaking the Bonds - Modern-Day Strategies to Counter Modern-Day Slavery.” Forms of modern-day slavery they discussed included sex trafficking; farm workers; and forced child and adult labor in sweatshops, and in the restaurant and hospitality industries around the world.

The panelists were Letty Ashworth (Delta Airlines); Ambassador Luis CdeBaca (U.S. State Department);
Ima Matul (Coalition Against Slavery and Trafficking); and Susan Stern (Presidential Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Initiatives).

The panel shared how the sectors they represented are working to combat modern day slavery. They stressed that awareness and education are vital. It is also important to ask where the goods we buy are made.

CSJ Sisters Mary Ellen Gondeck and Joellen Sbrissa attended the event as the Congregation of St. Joseph Representatives at the Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility (ICCR). They work with other ICCR members in engaging companies in an effort to transform corporate practices on a host of issues including rooting out human trafficking, ensuring safe water and human rights.

The hotline number that one can call if modern-day slavery is suspected is 888-3737-888 or (888-373-7888).
