Ascension Health was founded in 1999 through the union of the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System and the Daughters of Charity National Health System. In 2002, the Carondelet Health System was welcomed into Ascension Health. Serving healthcare needs in twenty states and the District of Columbia, Ascension Health is currently the largest Catholic system in the United States. Rooted in the healing ministry of Jesus, Ascension Health is committed to serving all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable.
Upon creation of the Congregation of St. Joseph in 2007, the new combined congregation assumed sponsorship of Ascension Health, and the Via Christi Health System became an affiliate member of Ascension Health while maintaining its co-sponsorship by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.

Via Christi is a Catholic healthcare system formed by the merging of the healthcare ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita and those of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. The ministry, named Via Christi, was dedicated to living the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. It provides a full array of services including acute care, senior services, retail services and health insurance.
